The story
It all started in 2011 with a simple idea. Bill Schacht, originally from New York, was living in Stockholm and missed Halloween – not just for himself, but for his daughter Magnolia. Instead of flying back every year, he decided to bring Halloween to Stockholm. That idea became Shockholm – a Halloween parade and creative festival made by and for the people here.
With help from Fryshuset, the concept grew from a thought into a full-scale event. Young people from the school helped with everything – dance, music, production, and promotion. Over 100 students were involved in the first year, all while keeping up with their studies. It became a real project with real ownership.
Even in the first year, the streets of Stockholm filled with more than a thousand people in costume. The city transformed into something playful and a little spooky. In people’s minds, the Globe became a giant eye. A peanut statue appeared. A six-meter-tall mascot named Sire Shockington stood on the roof of Fryshuset. Creativity was everywhere.
Since then, Shockholm has grown into the biggest Halloween event in Scandinavia. The festival is open to everyone and free to join. It includes not only the parade, but also live performances, costume contests for both people and dogs, Halloween-themed food called Shockholm Bites, and collaborations with schools, artists and community groups.
From the start, it’s been all about participation and creativity. Shockholm is not just something you watch – it’s something you take part in. It’s a place where families, artists, students, companies, volunteers and random passersby meet in a shared moment of fun and imagination.
Behind all the colors, music and costumes, there’s a deeper purpose too. Over the years, Shockholm has partnered with organizations like Min Stora Dag and Children of the Night to support children in need. It’s a celebration with both heart and meaning.
Now, 15 years later, the original idea still holds strong. Shockholm is not just about Halloween. It’s about community, creativity, and building something magical – together.
